Theories:
- Unmet social expectations, exacerbated by social media? Friendships take a long time to develop. Not going to just jump into meeting your best mate.
- Transition arrangements into university. Some will have moved away from communities, friends and families, some will be transitioning between communities.
- Covid? and its longer term affects on anxiety, mental health etc
- Misconceptions about opportunities (eg sports teams are performance-led)
- Students feel that they are a burden on others?
- Students feel that making friends is secondary to learning. When it should be an enabler of learning.
