This means that it offered clarity about a sinlge issue, but not regarding the totality of the organisation's position - forced union to adopt actions that might not be the best approach to addressing the issue - forced unions to adopt actions that might be incredibly resource intensive/ without a view of the resource implications. - Didn't distribute leadership and empower people- prescribed activity to a few individuals who could act on it. Our approach empowers everyone to reach for the expressed vision. [[Good policy empowers people]]. This approach allows changes to be made across the university hierarchy, because improvements to employment of students, for instance, can be made at the course, directorate, school, and central university level. - Old approach wasn't adaptable and didn't learn. By taking an approach where the Su can revise and adjust the policy book at every board meeting (and it will be reviewed each year) we can act slightly more nimbly than previous policy that technically existed in stone for 3-5 years. ### Other potential benefits - Could enable a broader approach to policy making across the UK, if other SUs adopt it. In Sweden there is a national policy book. - Gives clarity to all stakeholders about policy positions. Union staff, University staff, other officers, etc. gets disagreements in early, avoids arguments. ## See also - [[Wonkhe Blog Post on Policy Book]] - [[Podcast prep with Alan on the policy book 25.04.2025]]
