## Background
- Self-organising since 2003
- Introduced changes to improve (including Lean) but these didn't work
- Introduced individual business units and saw how some staff were producing 80% of the results ([[Pareto Principle]])
- Staff left
- But could afford to pay best performers more. Productivity increased 300%, costs fallen 50%.
- Business processes are defined through 'recipies' which are basically nouns and verbs.
- Links to [[Motivation]] and Dan Pink's ideas on autonomy, mastery and purpose, once the issue of money was taken off the table.
- Key skills- referred to as Magic.
## Implementation
- Joined with Agile manufacturing processes however this wasn't solving everything, but was a useful stepping stone.
- Brought P&L down to just one person eventually
- Many technicians left, graduates remained.
- Customers appreciate single point of contact.
==less about team working than in other scenarios I've encountered==
- It wasn't useful to do significant amounts of training for this change. Needs hearts and minds and this needs experience of it. Learn by doing.
- Self-management needs the space to evolve.
- Managers were given the opportunity to stay on, on the same pay, however this was not necessary as they all left due to the loss of status.
