"Ultimately, loneliness can play an important part in the decision of students to drop out of university10. A third of Salford students who said that they had considered dropping out, cited loneliness as a reason. This was higher for first (36%) and second (42%) year undergraduate students, those aged 25 or under (38%), students with a disability (38%) and white students (37%). Sample sizes were small for students from a gender minority and fourth year undergraduates for whom these percentages were also high. And the most cited reason for considering leaving was poor mental health (37% overall) which itself is likely to be strongly associated with loneliness."
